Flowers

Beauty in Bronze
Standing to attention   Fading Beauty

In these three photos, I was trying to create shots of these flowers that really highlighted the details of the flowers. Unlike my recent rose image, I wanted to capture the flowers in as much clarity as I could muster with the gear that I have available. It's worth clicking through to Flickr to see the full size versions of these.

The remainder of this post gives a bit of an overview of how what I did.

The Essence of a Rose

The Warmth of the Rose

I was in a florist shop with my daughter (I was looking for some flowers to photograph for a competition that I was planning to enter) when we spotted this cottage-garden rose. It wasn't actually really what I had been looking for, but she was immediately smitten by it and begged me to buy it - and I have to confess that I didn't need much persuading!

I spent a bit of time exploring ways of photographing it that did it justice, and this shot was the one that I was most pleased with - rather than being a relatively straightforward "record" shot of the rose I feel that this one captures more of the essence of rose - its softness and delicate colours - by creating a dreamy, soft-focus image... Or maybe I'm just waffling on and it just a pretty picture!!??

I did do a bit of post-processing (as usual) to get the final version as you see it above. The remainder of this post gives a brief overview of what I did.

Fireworks

Joyful Celebration
Fountain of Fire Fire Ribbons Blast Off

Here's a selection of fireworks photos - nothing particularly spectacular, just some cheap ones that we got mainly for the kids to see (they love them!).

The Tired Old Tree

The Old Tree - B&W

The Old Tree - Final

These are (obviously) two versions of the same photo - I first created the black and white one and then worked on that a bit more to get to the coloured one. I'm still not really sure which I prefer, so I thought I'd post them both for you to see.

The rest of this post shows the original photo and gives a brief description of the post-processing work involved.

The Garden Beyond the Trees

The Garden Beyond the Trees - Final

You've got to love autumn - it's such a beautiful time for photography! This is yet another(!) photo from the trip to be park with my sister - a slightly more direct view of the autumn colours this time.

The version you see above is the final image after post-processing - the remainder of this post shows the original photo out of the camera and brief details of the post-processing that I used to get to the final version.

Golden Morning

Golden Morning - Final

This is another of the photos from my dawn excursion to the local park with my sister.

The version you see above is the final image after post-processing - the remainder of this post shows the original photo out of the camera and brief details of the post-processing that I used to get to the final version.

Path to the Red Tree

Path to the Red Tree - Final

This is from a series on photos that I took on a photo expedition to the local park with my sister early one morning this past week. She was in the area, and we wanted to capture some of the autumn (fall) colours.

The version you see above is the final image after post-processing - the remainder of this post shows the original photo out of the camera and brief details of the post-processing that I used to get to the final version.

Blue Tomato

Blue Tomato

This is an image that I created from a rather deformed tomato that was one of the fruits of the family's tentative adventures into vegetable gardening... Its unusual shape caught my eye, so I thought I'd have a go seeing if I could create something interesting with it. I had also been looking for a good excuse to play with my new Gitzo Explorer tripod :)

This image has obviously been "Photoshopped" - the remainder of this post shows the original, unedited photo along with details of how I arrived at this final result.

Tripod Test / Review

In a slight change from past posts, I thought I'd share the results of some tests that I did on some tripods. The background was that I was looking at getting a new tripod to replace my very old Slik 504QF. I was surprised to find, while doing some searching on the Internet, that although I could find various reviews of different models, I found it really difficult to find any comparisons of shots taken on different tripod models to compare the actual final results. Most reviews were just based on the ease of use, cost, weight, etc. and only general comments on the overall stability.

Creative Colour with Flowers, Eyes and Jam

Colour Burst

Blue Eyes & Jam

I created these two images as an entry to a photo competition with the theme "creative colour". I didn't win anything, but thought you may be interested in hearing how they were done anyway!

The images above are the final versions after editing - the remainder of this post gives the basic details of the post-processing that I used for each of them.

Cozy Mill Barn

Windmill Barn

I read an article in Range Finder magazine recently about a studio that specializes in architectural photography called Attic Fire, and I was inspired by their approach to architectural photography. So, when I was on holiday in March, I thought I'd see if I could produce an image of the converted barn that we were staying in that was a bit more interesting than the normal straight shot.

The process of creating the final image was as follows:

  • I took a series of photos as the daylight faded into dusk so that I got a range of different lighting effects in the sky and on the barn. I also took a couple of shots in which I lit the side of the barn slightly with an off-camera flash to bring out the detail in the dark wood wall a little. The flash was propped on the roof of my car (well, minibus actually) just off to the left of the photo .
  • When I got back home after the holiday, I chose a selection of the photos (which I had taken in RAW) and processed them into JPEG in DPP (Canon RAW converter).
  • I combined the photos in Photoshop using layer masks to give the photo an overall "glowing" sort of appearance.
  • I made a copy of the flattened image, sharpened it, and overlaid that with a blurred copy of the same image at 15% opacity to give a soft focus effect.
  • Finally I tweaked the saturation a bit with a Hue/Saturation adjustment layer.
